History of GWL Scholarships
The first scholarship offered in Georgetown was in 1983 to honor Josephine Hooker Shain, one of the early summer residents, and later full time residents of the island. It was open to students attending 4 year schools and was awarded only after they had a successful first semester. In 1990, the Georgetown Working League decided to offer scholarships to students attending 2- year schools and vocational schools as well as 4-year schools. Woodex Bearing Co. expanded the program in 1994. From 2001 on, a variety of local businesses and residents increased the number of scholarships available to the eleven that are offered today.
