Scholarship Winners 2020

Congratulations to our 2020 GWL Scholarship Recipients !!

By Susan Means for the Georgetown TIDE

The Georgetown Working League Scholarship Committee, chaired by Barbara Andreotta, is pleased to announce this year's scholarship recipients, 18 in all. Committee members individually read all of the applications and met remotely as a group for discussion and final decision-making.

The areas of study represented by this year's awardees are particularly diverse. They are: aviation, biology, cognitive science, computer science, criminal justice, education, emerging media, English, environmental science, fine arts, French, international relations, managerial economics, marketing, math, music composition, nursing, psychology, studio art, veterinary studies, and web programming. A number of the recipients - which include high-school seniors, returning college students, and post-graduate students - are either double majors or pursuing both a major and minor field of study. The applicants for the annually-awarded League scholarships never fail to impress!

Normally, the League holds a celebratory luncheon for the awardees at GCC in June. It is an occasion that members look forward to all year long because it offers the opportunity to chat with the students elbow-to elbow around tables laden with good food made by members and decorated with vases of flowers cut and arranged by League gardeners. Most importantly, members appreciate the annual event for the chance to hear personally from each scholarship recipient about his or her personal academic and career goals. Of course, that gathering was not possible this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. GWL members remain hopeful that it will be possible to get together in person with the 2020 awardees at some time in the future - and snap a group photo of the deserving scholars of our town for posterity.

The League offers heartfelt congratulations to the following Georgetown students:

Alexander Bartone, Pomona College; Niccolo Bartone, Occidental College; Macy Irene Cole, Washington Community College; Mollie Crosby, UME Farmington, Mary Carol Jarmusz, Sacred Heart Univ.; Matthew Jarmusz, Ithaca College; Thomas Jarmusz, Ithaca College; Padraig Keith-Hardy, Colby College; Dory Kulis, Merrimack College; Aubrey Martin, Univ. of Southern Maine; Jonathan McDiarmid, Bentley Univ.; Emily Minott, Thomas College; Lara Park, Southern New Hampshire Univ.; Joseph Rice, Southern Maine Community College; Emma Roth-Wells, Mount Holyoke College; Sydney Swanson, Univ. of Southern Maine; Jordan Wilcoxson, UME Augusta; Emily Yurkevicz, Indiana Univ.
