Our quilt for 2010 is a compass rose design, and is inspired by our link to the sea. “The "compass rose" has appeared on charts and maps as a design representing compass directions since the 14th century. The term "rose" comes from the emblem's resemblance to the petals of a rose flower.” * Boxing the compass refers to a seaman’s ability to name 32 points of a directional compass in clockwise order.
As always, the design of our quilt is unique and the fun begins when we go shopping for fabric !!! If you live in Maine check our our two favorite quilt shops:
Mariner’s Compass in Bath and Busy Thimble in Litchfield. Thank you Amanda and Cyndi for all your help with our quilt! We found the perfect fabrics for this special quilt and delighted in the compasses as they came together. We have “compasses” of sixteen points, plus some smaller “stars” in the border. This was a challenge for our quilters, and everyone met this challenge beautifully. Learning something new is always a goal for us.
